About Mankato Martial Arts

Thank you for your interest in Mankato Martial Arts. We are a private full-time school specializing in Chang Hun style Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do is a Korean Martial Art known for its advanced kicking techniques. Chang Hun Tae Kwon Do is the original and traditional style of Tae Kwon Do developed by the modern day founder General Choi Hong Hi in the 1940's and nationalized in the 1950's.

Traditional "old style" Tae Kwon Do stresses not only the physical, but also the psychological, meditative, and philosophical aspects of training, while "modern style" schools place heavy emphasis on fighting and competition. Research has shown that those who train in traditional Tae Kwon Do demonstrate lessened aggression, lowered anxiety, and increased self-esteem, while those who train in the "modern style" show little change. It is our goal at Mankato Martial Arts to not only make exceptional martial artists, but to also improve our students' quality of life by teaching life arts as well.

Though most people can list the obvious physical benefits of studying Tae Kwon Do, such as improved coordination, increased flexibility, strength, and endurance, few people really understand the mental benefits that go along with learning Tae Kwon Do. The real goal is to condition the mind. It is the mind that has to learn to act quickly, often reading subtle signs and responding with a complex set of moves. The mental benefits of Tae Kwon Do, such as better focus and increased learning skills are possibly more significant than the physical.

We feel that one of the most important benefits of martial arts training is that it is fun. It may be difficult, trying, and frustrating at times, but there is always the excitement that comes from personal accomplishment. This is true fun, which is a far different thing than just being entertained.
